having issues with the sata ports on my board wondering if i buy pci raid card and use a sata to that

i dont want to buy a board unless i have too.

Best is to pick something what is not based on Marvell controller. I don't know what about new series but all older Marvells ( from X58/P67/Z68 boards ) had issues with optical drives and they were or not working at all or drives had write errors.

If you have Intel board then just use Intel ports for optical drive. If you have too many HDD then better is to use external controller for storage than optical drive.
One other option is to get USB drive which can be cheaper than a controller. Most users are barely using optical drives lately so that's actually a good idea.
