if you plug the three pin into the 4pin connector you lose the PWM control. so the fan may run at full speed.

to OCF!There should only be one way for a 3-pin fan to plug into a 4-pin connector. Generally, all fan headers have the same plastic guide & lock system that stops them from being connected incorrectly ...
