Recently acquired a GFFX5900 non-ultra from a friend of mine who wound up ordering too much stuff at once from newegg :p .

At any rate, its a GFFX5900 made by BFG. Popped it in my system, cranked it up to 456/948, and ran 3DMark '03. Scored a fairly respectable 5700-ish.

Kept the clocks where they were, and launched 2001.

16861? huh?

My OLD GeForce4 4200 was pulling 15,200 before the switch! I tried switching the drivers from the 53.03's to 44.03 (as i've noticed scores are higher with that set), and my scores DROPPED to 15,412.

What the heck is going on here? Is there any hope of breaking 20,000 with this card?

System:
Asus P4P800-deluxe (no vmod's)
P4 2.4c @ 3.4ghz (cannot go higher--motherboard craps out)
Memory is 283mhz FSB 3:2 (5:4 hasn't worked with ANY modules i've tried, no matter what speed) @ 2-3-3-8 (2.85v)
GFFX5900 128mb @ 456/948. (I've noticed the now-famous clock speed decreases when the drivers think the card is getting too hot. Is there any way to disable this?)

Yes, I know that 3DMark is purely a benchmark tool, and a poor one at that, but damnit, with a system like this, I should be breaking 20,000!

You *are* only running your memory at 188Mhz, so 17K doesn't sound totally unreasonable. That's pretty slow on the RAM, and that makes a huge difference in 3DMark01. Can you run 5:4 or 1:1 at a lower FSB speed? Say, 250FSB 5:4 (RAM at 200), or even 225FSB 1:1 (RAM at 225)? You might also try raising your latencies a bit if it allows for a higher speed. 2.5-4-4-8 or 3.0-4-4-8 is a few percent slower than 2.0-3-3-6, but it might let you push the FSB up significantly.

As far as the card overheating -- no, you can't stop it from doing that, because it's slowing the card down so you don't fry it. Lower the clocks or get better cooling.

Going to go with water cooling once my case mod project gets underway (can you say carbon fibre? :D ).

I'd KILL to run 5:4 with this memory, but as-is, it will NOT run 5:4 at ANY FSB. I'm talking even UNDERCLOCKING to a 100mhz system bus, it just won't do 5:4! I'll try benching at 267 1:1 3-4-4-8 though. Maybe that'll make 3DMark happier.

UPDATE:

265 FSB 1:1 @ 3-4-4-8 and GFFX5900 @ 454/954 - 17360

It's a start...but it's still too low :( .

Hey dont feel bad, check my sig. Im only getting 16888 in 3dmark03, cuz VIA believes that dual-channel RAM and PCI locks are a fad:( . I hate my VIA board with a passion, my scores are even more kiltered than yours.

I pull 6136 in 3dmark03 but under 17k in 2001?!??!?!!?. The NF7 will be here today, now I will finally lay to rest my VIA board and fianlly break 20k

As far as I can tell, my best bet for now is going to be getting either a new mobo and possibly pushing my 2.4 farther, or a new CPU with a higher multiplier, and using a lower FSB...

...and either could really get me a lower overclock, really :( .
