The fact that Microsoft is working on Windows 9 is no surprise, however so far we've received very little information on the next version of Microsoft's OS as most of the attention thus far has been focused on Windows Blue. According to Win8China, who have provided a number of Windows leaks in the past, Microsoft are likely preparing Windows 9 for a tentative November 2014 product launch, with a beta to be available in January 2014.

Now of course this is just a rumor at this stage, however a release scheduled for late 2014 does fit with what we've heard in regards to a yearly OS update cycle for Windows. Windows Blue will be an upgrade to Windows 8 that will be launched this year, while a full version upgrade will come the following year, and naturally November is the perfect time ahead of the holiday season.

What will come in Windows 9? Well we're not quite sure at this stage as its release is some time away, although Win8China believes improvements to touchscreen support will be included, which wouldn't surprise us at all. The site also says that a mobile version of Windows 9 is in the works, which likely is referring to Windows Phone 9 - a product almost certainly also in the works.

Hooray!

Hopefully bringing back the start menu, compatibility, ease of use, etc of Windows 7. We dont have to wait years upon years like with Vista for a new OS either. This is great.

Huzzah for w7 Mk II

Quite to the contrary. More touchscreen = more metro. Luckily, since Classic Shell freeware restores full Start Menu / Desktop functionality in ten seconds, that has never been a problem for us.
It appears that instead of calling this Service Pack 1 for Windows 8, they will call it something else - and charge us for it. Hooray indeed. Disapprove.gif

I admit the freeware works well, but I don't like having to fix something that wasn't broken before someone else broke it...

lol if that makes sense.

and more metro? Good luck, Microsoft. Really their best bet is splitting it like Apple did, iOS for mobile, and OS (letter) (animal) for desktops lol

But great, -I'm thrilled.-

When does Windows 7's support end again? When is DirectX12 coming out?

Sigh.

Good for you. Metro is not good for doing work on for most of us however. It's great to have both options and Classic Shell gives us Metro with a SHIFT+Start Menu under Windows 8.

Don't know about DX12. Windows XP updates will be available until second half of 2014 (a lot of people out there were fooled into thinking they ended years ago), but Windows XP is good until alleged Windows 9 gets released.

Windows 7 will be updated until 2020.

Windows 8 until 2023.

Microsoft has/will be moving to a upgrade cycle of every year. They also have a goal that Upgrades are more seemless (think ios)

Mainstream users seem to be shifting to tablets and other portable devices at alarming rate. This "eye-candy" is really attracting the folk who use computers for browsing facebook and using media resources. Things have been getting worse since Bill Gates left. In few years there might be some real competition at the OS sector. Or then not, who knows.
