I thought this was a automounting problem but now I'm thinking that maybe it's not.

Everytime I try to mount a CD, regardless of what kind of CD it is, Redhat 8 will totally freeze and I will have to turn off my computer from the power button.

I can't figure this out. Any ideas?

I got a Ricoh MP7083 CD writer and it's the only CD drive in my system.

Sounds like somekind of hardware configuration error. Look in to scsi emulation. As this is what linux uses to communicate with CD-R's, assuming it is an IDE writer that is :D.

If that is working try disabling DMA, sometimes you can do this in the bios. But if not you can do it with

hdparm -d0 /dev/cdrom

With problems like this, fixing the problem is easy. It's finiding the problem that is hard....
