Disabled Drive

Last night I just noticed that my computer disabled my sony cd-rw drive. It is in the device manager with a red X on it, and when i try to enable it, windows says it cannot enable the drive. I tried putting on some cd software and when i booted into windows, it said that it disabled a driver that caused stability issues. Could this be why my drive was disabled? What do i do to get it back? Is it broken? Oh and it is in the bios also.

Try uninstalling the drive and the controller the drive is on. XP automatically changes the drives transfer speeds if it thinks it has encountered an error.

the controller...? im stooopid here.

under the system management goto device manager and look for the controller,, under dvd/cdrom

and then....? uninstall?
