my standby option has disappeared off the face of the earth. how do i get it back?

Start\Control Panel. Click proper setting under System Standby.

thats just it, the options under Power Options for standy have dissapeeaarded

Try reinstalling your video driver and the MB drivers.

Video driver? What would that have to do with it?

If your video driver did not install correctly you will not be able to put your computer into stand by.
My wife has an old compac that she uses and I can not get any drivers to install for her addin video card that will let me put the thing into stand by, but if I use the onboard video it will work just fine.
