ok i think I figured out a way to get a cheap (FREE) Northwood for my computer. My girlfriend bought a DEll last year and it has a 2.0 NW in it!! I want to swap her my 1.8 Willy for it. I have no experience with OEM MOBO's. Can i just slap the 1.8 in her Dell MOBO and it work fine? Will she notice the slight change in clock speeds? All she uses her computer for are web browsing, e-mail, and chat. I figure she won't even be able to tell a difference. I just want to make sure that she won't have any probs with her computer after i make the swap. She is OK with it as long her her computer isn't noticeably slower or has any probs. Also with the stepping shown in the attached pic, is this a good overclocking chip? Is there software out there that lets you slightly overclock an OEM MOBO. Her Dell is running at 1.9ghz with the 2.0 chip in for some reason. I was thinking if I could like 100 mhz out of the ole 1.8 once i swap, then the clock speeds will ber virtually the same. What do you guys think?

Sorry to tell you that you caint use it The Willy has less pins I think 423 and the NW has 478. And I think you have the fastest willy so you are out of luck:(

ok now i am a little confused. I am almost positive I have a 1.8 478 pin Willy. i am currently at my girlfriends which is an hour away from my computer. When I run cpuz it says its the L2 256 Willamette. But at the same time I am almost positive my MOBO is a 478 pin. Can someone clear this up? Was there never a 1.8 Willy that was 478 pin. I am a bit of a newb, but I am pretty sure I have a 478 1.8 willy.

i just checked the intel site and I found that thier are 3 1.8 chips made.
423, L2 256, SL5VM
478, L2 256, SL5VJ
478, L2 512, SL6S6

I must have the SL5VJ. Maybe its not a very common chip or something.

how about this for a little fun. there are both!

do you know your s-spec? for example one of mine is SL6WU. if you can find this out it would make it simple. or if you don't want to tear your rig down fire up cpuz and look at the Core Revision.

This will narrow it down but not precisely enough to make 100% sure.

the SL5UT, SL5UV, SL67B, SL5UK, SL6BE, and SL5VJ are the 478 pin willies.

good luck. lol.

haha i must have edited this when you were writing your reply. I am positive that it is a 478 pin with 256 L2. Now I am sure that I have the 478. Can I make the swap that I mentioned earlier in the thread? Will her computer be slower to her doing e-mail and chat? It will still be stable as always right?

by the way Maxvla i got ur msg about joing your folding team. when I get back to my computer I will get it setup.

if the pins match up she won't even notice the processor is diffferent.

and thanks for the folding help :)

excellent! well once i get my CPU pulled out my system and swapped for her CPU. I will let you guys know how the overclock goes. Now that I have a decent northwood chip I am thinking when I get my new system listed in the sig, I will begin work on a water cooling setup with my old case and these components. Just something to mess around with. thanks for the help
