Ok so my friend wanted to play me in starcraft which i dont have on my computer. however, i did have the disk (like the original version, 1.0) and i noticed it had a crack in the center in the clear part...i didnt think much of it because ive used CDs with cracks in the center and its been fine. so i pop it in and start up the install...BOOM! i heard a big poping sound, not as loud as a gun shot, but pretty loud. so i go to open the cd-rw and i noticed the bezel was pushed out...i pressed the button to pop it out and it was stuck....so i went to go get a paper clip to force it out...and the CD was shattered, although most of it was inside the cd-rw itself. so i powered down and prayed my burner would be ok....i took it apart and got all the peices i could see out (im there there are microscopic pieces still in there). i havent tried it yet, but i think it'll work....the bezel is still sticking out, but it should work. heres some pics. i wont put them in the thread, but 56Kers, you've been warned! all pics are 800x600

Pretty cool...but it still scared the crap outa me

its this drive. its nice and quiet, 52X, however i think the disk was weak and since it had a crack on it, it couldnt handle to G's put on it when it started to spin.

EDIT: pic 11 was pretty much the same as 12, though 12 is closer so i picked it for showing.

This reminds me of the Mythbusters episode where Jamie made a CD travel at the speed of a 360x CD drive.

The myth was that fast CD drives can break CDs. I guess they never thought of cracking their CD.

That mythbusters was on last night. I had a Windows98 cd blow up in a 56x speed reader few years ago. Scared the ****zle out of me! Definately kickass!

Yeah that was a good one. I especially liked the part where they burned out the router motor by feeding it 240v at the end.

lol..that happened with my warcraft 3 cd, 40 bucks down the drain..but at least my friend gave me his cd

i did that with my dremel and a burned cd i diddnt want. stupid coasters....i dont think i'll EVER get all of the shards out of the dropdown ceiling...

Is there any way to limit the RPM during normal reads, as opposed to during reads for burning (Nero speed limit)?

I'd like to keep the disks spinning at 32x or slower.

The Starcraft CDs are especially notorious for blowing up in fast drives. Even without the crack, that thing may have gone boom.

are they really notorious for blowing up? anyway, im just glad the thing still works...

Out of every CD I hear about exploding, 90% of the time, it's a Starcraft CD.

At the school I worked at as a tech one of the students brought in her computer. I took out the CD-rom cause it wasnt working. I heard a rattling. I opened it up and found shards everywhere. You are lucky it still works. Hers the CD shards sliced through the ribbon cable inside pretty much destroying it.

I haven't played SC in years but for some reason I remember that CD would always spin at full speed all the time whenever I played, it used to get pretty warm after a while. Used to annoy me.
