i use AntiVir XP on my comp and i was doing an antivirus scan and all was going well when the program freezes all of a sudden. I have tried doing the scan 2-3 times and it always freezes up when it gets to scanning a file called '' driver.cab'' does anyone know what that is? and how can i solve this problem?
thanks
let me know if u need more info

i have never heard of antivirus xp, its probabbly crap, so just get a norton or mcafee product.

driver.cab holds all of the standard drivers that windows xp comes with

Log into safe mode via "msconfig" through Start | Run..

..then click on "Boot.ini", then check "Safeboot", then check "Network" right beside it. Press "Ok."

Allow the computer to restart. Log into Administrator.

Try Trendmicro's free online A/V [which I've found to find things that Norton/McAfee cannot in my experiences as a Cable ISP tech support guy] @:

Also, before running the scan, turn off system restore. Virii like to hide in restore points. Get back to me after this; be sure to delete or clean anything trendmicro finds.

Just because something isn't well-known, doesn't mean it's crap. Some of the lesser-known AV products are far better than Norton and McAfee in my experience.

That being said, you've probably become infected with something that is disabling your AV. As was suggested, turn off system restore, clear your temp files, and do a full scan at one of the many free online scan sites.

Probably too simple, however it's possible you aren't being patient enough - driver.cab may take longer to scan than most files, so if you wait you may find that the program is actually still responsive and scanning.

How long does it "freeze" for?

it freezes for quite a while....i wait 10 minutes and its still frozen and then windows shows the program as ' not responding'

Dude 10 mins for a virus scan isn't a long enough wait. A "Good" is through enough that it could take on average 3 hours (depending on system) to go through a scan, scanning deep in to each compressed file.
