VU Meter

I just picked a couple of VU meters. Onlt, all I have is the needle type displays. Anyone have any ideas on how to hook these to my soundcard? I would like to be able to have the inputs be hooked to a mini plug, so I can plug it in to and soundcard jack, or cd player, etc. Any one have a schematic or something? thanks!!

I think a VU meter is sort of like a voltmeter. You'd connect it in parallel with the sound cable if I'm right. Something like this.

I tried that, and it turns out i need some extras, like IC's. That's all i have been able to determine through internet research. that is a great drawing though.
