OK, Im trying ot telnet into my wrt54g router, and I start by clicking start->run..then type CMD....I get a command prompt, but i get C:\WINDOWS\Sytem32\CMD.EXE

then at the command line it says C:\ Documents and Setting\ my name>

when I type telnet, or telnet 192.168.1.1 it says "telnet is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

I've downloaded puTTY as a telnet client, but I have no idea how to use it...can anyone help me figure this out pls?

I should also mention Im using a hacked firmware called Kaistation v7.0.0.4c

You're in a world of hurt...sorry just kidding, I suggest consulting the router documentation for your router here--- http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=508&scid=35
I futher recommend using your browser to connect to the router (as show in the afforementioned documentation). You may have to specify a url other than the standard port 80..at any rate, access is very clear if you consult the above documentation. The fact that you don't have telnet installed or can't use putty suggests additional overhead you don't have to deal with if you follow the documentation.

In short, the docs will tell you to do something like...

In your browser specify: http://192.168.1.1. A password request dialog will open. Leave the username field blank, and enter "admin" as the password.

Uh... telnet isn't the same thing as http guys.

He needs to get the custom firmware first, and sort out Windows' telnet client second. Using putty should be trivial, just put in the WRT's ip and tell putty you want to connect via telnet.

turns out when you upgrade from xp home to XP pro, telnet isnt installed ( a feature of pro, not home) so I had to download a telnet client, I chose putty....thank you XWRed1. for the firmware on the router, Im using the latest linksys firmware and kaistation, which has a telnet server. Amazing what you can do with these routers and some aftermarket firmware! thanks to everyone who replied!
