lets say you have two of the exact same setup, just one ic pcix and one is agp.

How much better will pci perform?

Well AGP and PCI-E Pretty much have the same bandwidth now. Since the AGP slot isn't using its max bandwidth there is no 'real' advantage yet to go PCI-E. Main reason is that PCI-E is going to be replacing AGP completely in the high end cards with this next generation or one after that most likely.

While the "theoretical" bandwidth of PCI Express is exponentially greater, no more than what is afforded by AGP 8X is being saturated by today's games and hardware. However in the future, as things become more complex and powerful, the extra "lanes" will become very useful. It's like building an interstate vs a two lane highway. Sure, your population may only be 100 citizens right now, but the future growth to 10,000 citizens will make the provision of extra bandwidth worth the investment.

Ironically, current PCI-Express scores seem to indicate that the more mature AGP drivers/platforms deliver more consistent/better framerates in many instances...likely the result of driver issues/teether pains. Even a 16 lane highway would grind to a halt if it had 16 student drivers clogging it! :p

I remember seeing a Battle between the pci-e and agp versions of the MSI 6600GT and the difference was one frame persecond in favor of the pci-e version.
Of course like stated above,in the future pci-e could have more of an advantage.

It's basically like shooting a basketball. AGP is a standard hoop, PCIx is a 5 foot wide hoop. The current sized ball fits in either one. But make the ball bigger in th future (bigger video cards) and the ball won't make it through the regular hoop. It will make it through the wider one, the PCIx.

it would fit through, just more slowly

currently no difference, although if u can choose one for pcie just for upgradability reasons
