Cd rom drive keeps dissapearing?????

Every now and again my cd rom drive dissapears from the control panel and no longer functions, does anyone have a clue why this is as i presume there is nothing wrong with the drive because it does work occasionaly.

Shut down the machine, remove and reseat all of your components, especially the video card.

I ran into this problem on a stock compaq desktop and it was screwing up my upgrade to XP, a call to the help desk (after beating my head against the wall) and they said to reseat the video card. Illogical, but I did it and the problem was resolved. I know this sounds bizzarre, but it's true.
