Is it worth getting a 148 opteron. My present system is a K8N NEO2 with a win3200@2700 stable

I have a good water cooling setup DD on 800xtpe Rbx on cpu.

I only play games online.

Thanks for any suggestions John

Well seeing that you got water, these opterons under air can hit up to 3.2ghz on air, i could imagine you'll be getting higher than that on a oppy. Along with the 1mb L2, it will be one of those upgrades that you probaly don't need, but have to have. I got a 3700+ San Deigo, 300x9 stable and I want to get one, almost pondering doing it.

Aren't opterons designed more for servers or workstations, not really PC use?

The current Opterons that everyone is hyping about is simply a slower (in ammount of mhz) San Deigo cored Athlon 64. The reason why people are hyping so hardcore over these is they are made out of much finer material & waffer. Ultimately giving you a much MUCH better OC than the Venice & San Diegos. Basicly they are the same thing as 3700+/4000+ San Deigos just slower, they have the same core, same cache, slightly lower mhz, much better memory controller & much cheaper.

looks like one is on air only and I'm in the same boat about weather or not to make the plunge as I'm on san diego 3700+ @2.86 1.57volts, decisions decisions. what do you think?

Broke down and orderd a148.
If it hits 3000 i hope to get faster shooting power in ut3.
Need time to put in a bigger more psi water pump then elim1048
Thinking of 2 pumps just in case impeller brakes
Will try k8n neo 2 nf3 first, good old agp board.
board not the most stable above 283 or so.

I would really really suggest to get a different board . Neo2 just wont be able to cut it for you mate. Opterons need a bit different alpha timing settings than normal sandy and venice cores. DFI NF4 or NF3 would be the perfect board for you with the opteron. I know coz Im running one atm .

Just took out winne after a year of use @2700.
Set default vcore 135 137 volts
Put in 148 cabye.
Started at 273*11 3003.
Raised to 279 3069 got bsod in pie.
Increase volts to 1.424.
Reset to 275 3013 played online for 2 hrs.
Need to up the volts next.
Feels smoother in games etc maybe the extra L2
Only 300+ more speed in a years time.
