Based on an article that is over at V-R Zone which toured one of the AMD plants, the information is laser etched on the chip after it is tested and graded. It is not programmed therefore I don't see how there could be a way that would allow software to "read" it.

Oh ok, I thought maybe there were a few bits of data somewhere that might be used to identify the stepping electronically, kind of like how CPU-Z reads the family, model, revision, etc... Just curious, but I guess there is none. Thanks. :)
