Seeing how the latest release of the 7800 GTX card is far more than the inclusion of 512MB of ram, why was this card not labelled as the "Ultra" edition? With a 550 MHz GPU, and a huge 1700 MHz memory frequency, this card is significantly better than its 256MB GTX little sister. Would it not be an advantage from a marketing perspective to give it the "Ultra" label, to further impress those who want the best, and to set it apart from all the others?

I think they dropped ultra because in the 6800 series EVERYBODY was buying the GT and nobody could find the ultra to actually buy it. 6800GT achieved higher internet cult status than the 6800 ultra so nvidia wanted to cash in on this and used the GT name for the 7800 series.

Back with the Geforce3 they made a "titanium" version that proved very popular so they cashed in on the popularity of the "titanium" name by making ALL gaming geforce4 cards "titanium" or "ti" (not including MX which is budget only).

The market value of the "GT" name brand was just much higher than the "ultra" so they stuck with it.
