Don't have permission to access files

I'm trying to help out a friend of mine. He recently added an old HD to his system. He can see the drive and most of the files but he cannot access the user files under "Documents and Settings". This drive was used in his old system and was running XP Home. His current system has XP Pro.

Is there any way to recover his files? He tried booting off the old drive but he gets a BSOD after seeing the XP Home loading screen. He tried booting in safe mode and got the same thing.

did it have some protection on the files?
