7900GT Temperatures

Well, my BFG 7900GToc (475/1360) just arrived with all the caps intact. It is up and running, but the temps are freakin' scary.

My MSI 7800GT was about 44 idle, and about low 60s under load.

This thing is 63 idle and in the mid to upper 70s running Luna demo. I tried the recommended overclock settings and it just froze on the first test of 3dmark. Obviously the temp is an issue even at stock speeds.

Is this normal for these chips? What happened to the new process using less power and running cooler?

Forceware 84.21 (CD included 83.90) brought the temps down to 52/70 idle/load.

Still hot, but much better. Very weird! This card is only clocked AT 475/1360 and coolbits autodetect suggested 558/1600!

What clock speeds? ...and what are you using as a load reference?

520/1500 played bf2 for a 2 hours and alt tabed out to the nvidia tab temp reference i left open.

using the new 84.21 drivers.
