quake 4 lagging

I'm currently playing quake 4 with my rig. I noticed that when I play on ultra quality setting, It takes 3 times longer to load the level of the game than in high quality setting. Also noticed that after the level is loaded, the games is lagging for the first 30 seconds of the game. just curious what's causing it?

Even though the X1900XTX is a beast, open GL isn't ATI's forte, and the game just seems to be poretty badly optimised anyway, it really requires far more powerful hardware than it should, hence Raven rushing out the multithreading patch.
