Password Software For External HDD

My brother just bought a external 160GB HDD USB2.0 and wants to encrypt it or password it incase it gets stolen. It's only got muisc and pictures on it but he's a security freak and keep going at me to find something.

Anyone have any suggestions on some free good value security software that might help.

It's not recommended to use truecrypt on a device, but that's what I'd do.

I am doing a computer course at college and it's the MCPT In Windows XP and Office installing via networks ect. I remember him telling us about encryption within windows just wondering is that ok and secure.
