I've owned this mobo for a few years now and have been using it with RAID-0 (two Seagate SATA 250GB hdd's) ever since.
Today, I bought 2 more SATA 250GB Seagate hdd's and created a 2nd array for creating scheduled backups using Acronis TrueImage. I made the 2nd array raid-1, mirroring each other. This means I have 500GB total in the 1st array, and 250GB with fault tolerance in the 2nd array. The 500GB obviously has no fault tolerance. I figured this way, I can still have very good Read performance (no Write performance gain/loss) and have backups of the most important 250GB of data out of the total 500GB of data in the 1st array (0, Stripe). I also would take advantage of the 250GB capacity increase instead of losing both drives to redundancy, if I was to use them in raid-5 instead...not to mention the major loss of speed in writes.
My question is...if the raid controller fails in my motherboard (A8N-VM CSM), or the motherboard dies and I buy a different one, will I lose any data off the 2nd array (mirroring) or will I still be able to access its data by connecting one of them (or both hdd's) directly (without raid) to the new motherboard, which has a different raid controller? I do realize I'll lose the 1st array, but if I didn't lose the data in the 2nd array then I'd have access to the Acronis backups which reside on both hdd's in the 2nd array.
Another words, if the raid controller fails, and I take one or both of those hard drives to another desktop pc, raid or no raid, will I still be able to read the entire 250GB of data on either hard drive? If not, how can I protect myself from this without sacrificing more cash, performance in reading or writing, or 100% storage loss capacity?
When $$ permits, I'd like to buy a separate raid controller in the future but for now I'm stuck with what I have. You're welcome to add better suggestions on how I can maximize more speed, lose only 50% of storage capacity for redundancy and still have a backup in case 1 hd fails, or 1 hd has its data lost because of a virus. The raid will give me hardware failure protection only. But with Acronis' TrueImage's backups on the redundant array, I have the data on that array quite safe as long as both hd's don't die, or a virus doesn't destroy THAT data.
