A $.99 calculator at back to school time at Walmart probably ...

Other than that, I would say a netbook (~$299) or maybe a nettop (~$399).

That one would require him buying a monitor.

If you check your local craigslist, you can typically find a netbook (the 8.9") variety for 150-200 dollars. Its probably going to be the cheapest, small computer, unless your looking at an old PIII laptop which someone would probably give you for free because they are so slow. If you don't want a netbook, then you can probably find a P4 or Sempron Laptop for around 150-200 as well.

ugh.. just say no!

Pick up a nice used SFF PC from someplace like geeks.com or ebay. $300 with monitor is probably most you will spend.

Older monitors with lower resolution (still higher than a netbook) will cost you anywhere from $25-75 used. You want a higher reo****ion spend aobut $100. PCs you can get on ebay REALLY cheap, on geeks starting at about $200 for a decent dual core debranded unit (debranded means they put tape over the HP/Compaq/Dell logos))

If a p4 would meet your needs, you could probably get a full setup for about $150 (including monitor) most SFF P4s run $50-75 on ebay)
