Hello,

First time posting in this forum, so hello everyone!

I have a 3 year old gaming rig equipped with the 8800 gts and am interested to know whether or I should get a new card.

Ideally, it should outperform (naturally~) the 8800 gts but still be sub-$200.

Nowadays many cards support hdmi w/ audio via various means, which is the reason why I decided to upgrade (my 8800 doesn't support audio).

I would appreciate any recommendations!

Funny that you would post this because I was considering upgrading from the 8800 GTS 512. Its really starting to hold back my system especially with bfbc2.

I'd say the most logical upgrade was something around ATI 5770 or GTS 250.

How is it logical? The GTS250 will only provide a very small increase in fps over the 8800gts 512Mb as architecturally they are the same card. The GTS250 has had a small bump in clock speeds as it is built on a smaller process which draws less power and therefore produces less heat. The HD5770 is a better choice, only a small % behind the HD4870 in DX10 benchmarks. I would go for the HD5770 or GTX260 personally.

Very true but that is around and above 200$ which the op was saying he was trying to stay sub. Obviously there is much more bang for the buck with the HD 5770.

It can not be 256MB, There was three versions of the card.

The first two were the 320MB and 640MB ones that were followed by the G92 512MB version that was slightly faster.

I wouldn't upgrade to anything lower than 5770 or GTX260. 260 is faster but 5770 handles DX11..

Huh, you're right. It's 320 MB.

So 5770 or 260 huh?

I would say the only reason to get the GTX260 over the Ati5770 is if your board supports Sli.

The GTX260 (216 sp) may be a little faster but I would rather have DX11 and native support for audio via HDMI.

I second the motion to get a 5770!!! it comes quite close to beating a 260 216 core and in some benches actually does outperform it.

+1 on the HD5770. It will show a big increase in resolutions and settings where that 320MB of memory on the old card isn't enough for all the textures etc. :)

The 5770 his hampered by the severely cut memory bus. It is 128 vs the 256 of the 5870, and the clock speed is cut alot as well. I am sorry, but DX11 support is not enough to sway me to go for a crippled card vs a GTX260 that actually will have better average FPS vs the 5770.

GDDR5 makes up for the narrower bus on the 5770 vs GDDR3 and wider bus on the GTX260. Otherwise their performance wouldn't be as close as it is. Basically GDDR5 on 128 bit is equivalent to GDDR3 on 256bit. And yes I know the GTX260 is not 256 bit.

The HD5770 will be around 5-10% slower than the GTX260 from all the reviews I have read.

Tom's Hardware comparison:
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2010-gaming-graphics-charts-high-quality/compare,2137.html?prod[4023]=on&prod[4000]=on

This shows the HD5770 overall doing better at 1920x1200 in the sum of FPS benchmarks, and using less power whilst doing so. Real world tests are always better than relying on the theoretical performance.

+1 real world reviews are much more reliable then talking tech that does or does not do better.:)

I'd really look at how much gain you are going to get over your current by going w/ a 260 or a 5770....not much. Think of the cost verses performance increase. If you went to a 5850...there would be a noticeable increase. I know you want a sub $200 card, id just stick w/ the 8800 if money is an issue. Save a little extra and get a much better card. Dont jump down my throat...i'm just tossing out another idea for him to mull over. Ive made incremental upgrades before and in retrospect, it was a waste of money for the slight gains.

OH.....:welcome:to the forums!

There's still a few details we need. What resolution monitor you will be using, and what CPU?

I'd recommend to save up a bit more, wait until the gtx460 comes out and see how prices are then. It would be ideal to get at least a 5850, but depending on your CPU and the games you play, there might or might not be a huge performance increase (overall, there should be some increase even with a low end cpu).
