Drive was working ok for 3-4 years. Last week drive light stayed on , wouldnt boot. Lighty tapped then booted and run fine. Did this on and off. Now no boot, Accuator arm clicks against spindel when powered up. Data isnt that critical but would like to get running again.

My main question is: Can the platter be swapped to a identical drive and expect it to operate? without a clean room and make shift plastic tools to get the platters moved?

Saw a video and looks like it might be fairly easy, but then again never did one. If it doesnt work out, only will lose price of another drive, instead of recovery at $800 to 9K. Seagate specs says 5 years is service life. Seems short to me as I have some machines at ten or more.
Thanks
Jeff
