Hey everyone. New to these forums, hope my topic will be in the right sub category. I apologize if its not but it is a motherboard question.

CPU - Intel 2600k ASUS Auto OC @4.4
CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-C14
MB - ASUS P8P67Pro
GPU - EVGA 680 SLI (On/off depending on game)(SLI is off for BF3)
RAM - Corsair vengeance 16 GB DDR3
PSU - Seasonic X850
HD/SSD - WD black 1 TB/Samsung 830 128 GB
Sound card - Asus ROG Xonar Phoebus
Windows - Windows 8
All drivers are up to date as far as i know.

My system was built around the release of sandy bridge 2600k. My motherboard is an ASUS P8P67 PRO (Don't remember which revision, but it was sent back for recall because of the SATA problem when it was released).

Anyways, about 9 months ago I started overclocking my 2600k and reached 4.7-4.8 OC stable and stayed like this for 6 months or so. Then all over a sudden my computer started hard freezing randomly when ever I would play BF3. So I dropped the Overclock down to 4.5 and it was fine for maybe a week or two and then started hard freezing again. I dropped the OC all together and went back to stock. Waited a couple of weeks-month with no hard freezing so I tried the ASUS Auto OC which brought me to 4.4 and I have been at that for a few months now. Yesterday my computer hard froze for a second or two but came out of it and i continued to play as normal.

Is this my motherboard that is causing this? CPU?

I couldn't reproduce the problem when benchmarks were run or any stress test. I cant remember if other games/programs ever prompted a hard freez, only BF3 since I i play that the most.

I have been considering to upgrade to Haswell because of this problem but thought I would come here first for insight before I waste money.

Thank you

USB problem? That was a SATA issue on P67 (unless that specific board had an issue with USB).

With what was listed... no clue. What was your voltage at when you were at 4.7GHz? Have you tried running a memtest to see if the memory are throwing errors? Tried rolling back GPU drivers if it only happens in game? What troubleshooting have you done so far?

could be the motherboard. happened to my Asrock G31m-s. i had my Pentium D E5200 overclocked to 3.6ghz and then after a while it would start giving me the BSOD.

try RMA'ing the board with Asus. let us know how things work out. hopefully the warranty is still active...

if the boards warranty is no good then you could get one of these boards listed below.

Asrock Extreme6 z77

MSI Z77A-G45

Asus P8Z77

all the boards i listed above will support your CPU.

if you want to just go ahead and buy a whole new board AND CPU then here is a list of Asus Z87 boards and an Intel 4770K

YES SATA haha I knew it was something but for some reason USB came to mind.... fixed post.

My V was around 1.3 but i cant remember exactly what i left it at. I have not done a memtest. I didn't roll back drivers. I have only updated since. As far as troubleshooting goes. I didnt do anything more then just intel burn test to recreate the problem/test the new OC I put. At the time It didn't phase me as it went away after I went back to stock settings.

Killa24: I don't know if this will help you in anyway its just what i have found on the Geforce Forum Website. It appears they is a hit and miss problem with your card and certain drivers etc. It also mentions about your Mobo plus Bios up dates. So i will post this for you and the members to look at and decide for themselves. As i do not have any experience with that card unlike others on here. AJ. ;)

2, http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1871019&high=GTX680+BF3

The bottom site has a lot of good information regarding your problems.

Yeah i'm not even BSOD though, its literally hard freezing with sound looping and cant do anything.

Thank you for the links. Ive been looking into a setup already and if i would upgrade, it would be to the ASUS Maximus VI Formula......

RMA isnt a bad idea either i will check into that. Maybe if i can, i will upgrade anyways and just make a streaming PC :) but that is if the MB is what is at fault.

I will try a memtest just in case though. Any recommendations on which memtest to use and how long to run it?

Looks like you have some work to do then.. try that stuff out and see if it helps.

The answer is in post 5 ED but as always they want the cookie way out!! It clearly says there is a driver problem after certain drivers. All they say is to use driver sweep and Re-install the drivers in the post and that seems to solve this issue. So some says RMA the Mobo the post shows it does not matter what Board you have because its down to the GTX680 card and the way it works with certain drivers etc. But meeeh leave it there. AJ. :( :-/

You meant 2 lol!! Typo.

Yes, the answer was in post 3 to try new drivers, LOL!

That said, I wouldnt put too much stock in it... I have used damn near all NVIDIA drivers on a 680 for quite a while on BF3 with no issues (up to a couple months ago). A new driver though needs to be tried just in case an issue is affecting him. :)

*thinks for a while*

HUEHUEHUEHEHUEHUE "sandy bridge"

anyway, now that i think about it, remove the video cards and play a game on it or run some video bench mark like heaven just to make sure its not the video cards.

as for memtest, you can use this program

unzip and run. you will need a usb for it as it will turn it into a bootable copy of memtest.

SO i performed the memtest and left it on for 9 hours. Zero errors, so its not my ram.

Tried multiple Drivers after doing a clean install while my overclock was at 4.5. Still did the hard freezing randomly.

Any other thoughts?

What's the current clock, and the Vcore both at idle and while running Prime? Also what's the Vcore set to in the UEFI, including the current level of LLC? And have you tried disconnecting the WD HDD?

After it crashed, i went back to the Auto AI OC in the asus motherboard.
Started playing BF3 while i had Sony Vegas open. Not doing anything, just open it i hard froze, screen went black.

This is what it looks like with prime running,
http://gyazo.com/d7b57143b80dc2e6b3685966d999cb01
Without prime running
http://gyazo.com/eeb8a284c871d11c1984427232aa36d1

Everyhting in the UEFI is set to AUTO.

No i have not tried disconnecting the WD HDD because that has everything on it and because this crashes randomly. Once a day or once a month.

isnt the core voltage suppose to be a bit lower than that? i have mine at 4.2 with 1.12v and it runs fine. try setting it to 1.17 and see how that works out for your processor.

dunno if it would make a difference for your processor since yours is sandy bridge and mine is ivy bridge.

You're comparing two generations, as well as i5 to i7. It won't be the same.

My 10c is to go back to the beginning and do a proper OC using the Bios and nothing else!!

Then you could set it all and test it properly, but its up to the OP if he wants to try this out?

I have done this and that is where the problem has started. But I will try it again and see what happens.

Ive shut off the OC and im at stock now. Still did it. I looked up in the event viewer and i get warnings, an error and a Critcal around the time of the freeze

The kernel power message is because you didn't shut down Windows properly.
