3 way sli problems maximus v extreme

iv recently bought a 3rd gtx670 for 3 way sli on the maximus v extreme board, but due to the size of my other gpu i cannot use the recommended slot 3, so there for i am using slots 1,2a and 4, unfortunatly my pc wont pick up the 3rd card as sli, just says dedicated physx, is it to do with the 3rd card being in slot 4 and not 3.

Yes, the cards need to be in slots 1, 2A, and 3 for a 3-Way SLI setup.

Thanks very much, is there anything i can do to change the depth of the card besides selling this one and buying a one tht only takes up 2 slots?

Different cooler, although I'm not aware of any 2-slot aftermarket coolers.
