Advice on a build

I've been out of the loop for a while and am looking to actually build a decent rig. My use age varies considerably, try out Linux distros, or dualboot and VM, media editing, 3d modeling, light gaming, media playback, typing, internet browsing etc. Gaming is dungeons and dragons online, so not extremely graphics heavy, and I don't care about max settings.also want to be able to reuse parts as much as possible when I upgrade in the future e.g. cases don't usually break, PSUs can be used on more powerful rig, etc.

I read a few good reviews about the new amd processors and that they worked for wow on med settings reasonably well, so I figured ddo would be fine as well. Mostly would be doing movie playback.

Don't need an OS, monitor, or DVD drives, have plenty laying around.
Looking for advice on better parts or cheaper parts.

I think that for a grand you should be able to build an Intel i5 system with a 7870. That would smoke the APU.
