With any luck, I'll be setting up a new i7 build later this week. I've been hearing horror stories about how hot that cpu gets on the stock cooler, though. What are the recommended after market coolers for it, and how much money are we talking about?

How much money are you willing to spend and what case do you need it to fit in?

This is my case (I've had it for two different builds, this will be the third!):

It's not the most spacious case. I had to rip out my hdd bays and put my hard drive in a floppy bay in order to make the Accelero Xtreme III fit in there.

As for the money, I don't know. I probably won't want to go much higher than $100usd on the cooler. I'll consider it if there's good reason to, though.

As it has a 120mm back fan most tower coolers should fit. Could you measure the distance from motherboard to inside of side cover? Than we can tell you what coolers will fit.

Looks like I have 17cm space there.

The new build is up, currently on stock cooler with no overclock. The stock cooler was so easy to install I thought for sure I was doing it wrong (especially compared to the gpu cooler I installed recently).

Than coolers of 162-163mm will fit. (the top of installed CPU is 7-8mm above motherboard)

*cooler base to bottom fin. (add 8mm for motherboard to bottom fin.)
**fins are at 3 different levels
All cooler height data is actual cooler height and does not include the 7-8mm for CPU to motherboard.

^TC14PE (Phanteks) is 163mm if you remove the thumbscrew in crossbar and lower middle fan flush with top of cooler.
^All front fans plus the height of RAM above motherboard must be less than 167mm

The K2 looks amazing, but I can't find a proper review of it. All I can find is one person on newegg saying that it sounds like a hair dryer. However, the TC14PE has just glowing reviews. That could be the winner.

Here's a good review. Sahil does very comprehensive reviews.

Sound levels compared to others

Edit: A mate has one and changed fans to TY-147 fans. Not because they were too loud but we picked up the TY-147 fans for £5.00 each. ;) We both prefer the TY-147.. but all I use is TY-140, 143 and 147 fans. If you want more reviews I can supply more links

I support the NH-D14, its silent and works great.

That said, what RAM are you using?

That's the K2? I was looking at the Dynatron K2.

And here's the RAM I'm using:

You can always delid the CPU to reduce the heat ;)

We refrain from mentioning this. It's hard to do right and many of our users won't understand it much. Not saying the OP won't understand.

We try to prevent crazy noob ideas because it's the Internets and it will happen.

We try to KISS here but your comment is worthy and it does make a big difference. Not for the average or above average Joe.

If you have done it and are a big time overclocker, we are glad to have you here. :welcome:

There are also some descent AIO water coolers in that $100 price range, that is provided you have a 120 mm exhaust fan at the back.

I'm weary of anything that involves decapping. It's easier to damage your processor doing that than with heat.

Just to give you an idea here's a round up on Tom's Hardware:

Nine Big Air Coolers For Intel's Haswell CPUs, Reviewed

29db on the Noctua? That's amazing.

I do, in fact, have a 120mm exhaust fan in the back of my case.

Just something to think about, especially if you're worried about CPU height clearance. The CPU block on most AIO water coolers only stand a couple inches tall in most cases.

Sorry about that. That thing doesn't have 8x 6mm pipes and itn't 140x128x158mm :D

Your RAM is 30mm tall so should be no problem under cooler. Will be almost touching/touching side cover with a 140mm fan but should be fine.

I would avoid the AIO/CLC coolers. They are usually more expensive, don't cool any better if as good and their pumps can have problems. Air coolers have no moving parts so there is nothing to give problems except fan.. and they are easily replaced on most coolers.
