Applying thermal paste on Hyper212+ and i5 2500k

What is the proper method? What I did was apply some on the heatsink and spread it with a credit card to kind of fill in the ridges of the exposed heatpipes and smooth it out. Then I drew a vertical line on the i5 2500k without smoothing it out and pressed the heatsink into it.
However this method is not yielding me good temperatures. Maybe I put too much thermal paste?
At 1.25vcore I'm getting around 40C idle and 60C load.

What is ambient temp? Those temps are prob spot on for that cooler and that processer.
