I am wanting to upgrade to a 4core CPU for my ASUS M2N SLI.
Please don't confuse this with; M2N-E SLI or M2N-SLI deluxe.
See page http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131246

CPU Socket Type AM2 AM2+
CPU Type Phenom X4,3x /Athlon 64 X2 / Athlon 64 FX / Athlon 64 / Sempron
FSB 1000MHz Hyper Transport (2000 MT/s)
Chipsets
North Bridge NVIDIA nForce 560 SLI MCP

I know with bios v1002 i can run up to Phenom X4 9850 AM2+
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=M2N-SLI&product=1&os=5

I remember reading about a 95W limit on the CPU, But I don't know where I read that, or how true it was, Do you know?

has anybody ran a 125W on this board?

Where can I buy your recommended 4core CPU on-line?

Thank you

Thanks for the reply jarlmaster47
I will keep the "Athlon 64 X2" 5600 in mine.

But I was really looking towards a quad-core, AM2 AM2+

You can often figure out the CPU watt limit by looking at the ratings of the supported CPUs (though in this case it's a little less obvious). The Phenom I 9850 came in three different versions. Two of them were 125W CPUs and the last was a 95W CPU, the HD9850WCJ4BGH. In all other respects the 9850 are the same but since ASUS only lists the 95W version it's pretty safe to assume that's your board's power limit and it's also about the most powerful CPU it will support (if you can find a 95W 9850).

If this is pretty much a gaming rig you're probably better of with a faster X2 like you have. That board might give you a mild overclock fairly easy and you have a little room since it's only an 89W CPU (I presume since most of them are). If you need help doing that just shout! :)

If you do other more intensive things with it, like video encoding or a lot of multi-tasking, or you have games that use more than 2 cores/threads (GTA IV for example) then moving up to the 9850 should give you an improvement in those areas - just make sure you get the 95W version and not one of the 125W versions. ;) Be careful, the one jarlmaster47 linked above is 125W - not good. The 940BE is also 125W and probably wouldn't work anyway since it's a Phenom II. Most 5xx chipsets won't support the Phenom II due to lack of BIOS support (There are some exceptions).

I like shopping at Newegg because the very few times I've needed it there's never been a problem with their customer service. ZipZoomFly is also a good e-tailer and sometimes have better deals, sometimes not.

Good luck with whatever you decide ... :)

Thank you QuietIce

Your reply was very useful, You did a good job paying attenion to the M2N SLI board specifications

It looks like my options are limited, 95W and avalibily.

From what I can find, "AMD PHENOM QUAD CORE 9650 AM2+ CHIP2.3GHZ 4MB 65NM 95W 3600MHZ"
At http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/EP45982086.htm?utm_medium=cpa&utm_source=Shopping.

I am buying this one.

In case anyone else is here asking about the M2N-SLI Phenom II, I remember reading about a beta BIOS that (limited) supported Phenom II.
And another person installing Phenom II, the BIOS reporting, unknown processor, but was able to set proper buss, corr, multiplier, ect... and had it working.
But I could not find ether post on Asus forum.

Big thanks to all of you!!!
