I want to know if I would see a noticable difference in performance if I upgraded by CPU to an i5 quad core 6500. I'm not a gamer. I need 4 cores to improve streaming. Looks like it will cost me about $70-$100 on Ebay.

Current cpu info below.

Number of cores 2 (max 2)
Number of threads 4 (max 4)
Manufacturer GenuineIntel
Name Intel Core i3 7100
Codename Kaby Lake
Specification Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-7100 CPU @ 3.90GHz

Welcome to the forms :)

Looks like the i5 is a generation older, and has a lower clockspeed, so single-threaded applications might be a bit slower. The extra two cores ought to make a difference to multi-threaded applications, but you'd be moving backwards effectively.

A better bet might be an i5 from the same generation e.g. i5-7400 / i5-7600 / i5-7700, which will involve less of a hit to single-threaded performance but still give a couple of extra cores for multi-threaded work?

Yeah, I recognized that it was from an older generation. My problem is budget. The i5s you mention are well above $100 as far as I can find (eBay, Amazon, Offerup, Craigslist). Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for the welcome, btw!
