Second hand models of r9 290/390 can be found for around $250. R9 390x are about $300 used.
This looks to be a big improvement for team red, although a GTX 970 is probably the way to go at that price range due to power consumption.
Still, it might be worth holding off until Polaris 10 for those that are keeping an eye on the GTX 1070 for forlding.
