I'm using windows 8 and when I right click on the C: and click properties, it tells me i'm using 54GB of space. But when I go into the C: and highlight all the folders, even hidden ones, it tells me the size of everything is about 32GB....why the 22GB discrepancy?

ok..so I reduced my paging file from 8GB to 1GB (using SSD). Now its showing 47GB used but still 14GB of space that I don't know where its being allocated...hmmm

You could run windirstat and it will give you a visual break down of your hd storage usage. I know in windows 7 you have to disable hibernation through cmd, not sure if it is the same for windows 8. Turn off system restore like thideras said to gain more space.
