firmware for optical drive on mac OS X

A friend recently had her cd drive go out on her mac desktop (OS X) - I spoke with someone at the apple store who said I could essentially use any optical drive I have laying around and it would work with the correct firmware.

Is this all that needs to be done? And any ideas on where can I find the firmware for this?
