I'm clueless about hardware. Because of this, I've almost not considered
building a computer rather than just buying one. Once I compared the
prices for custom built computers rather than pre-built ones, I've been
thinking about building for the first time.

I found a place where a guy has several lists of parts for possible
builds.

http://elitegamingcomputers.com/good-cheap-gaming-computers/#23

Here is the one I'm considering:

CPU - Intel Core i5-4430 3.0 GHz
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-H81M-S2PH
Video Card - Gigabyte Radeon R9 270x
RAM - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB
HDD - Western Digital Blue 1TB
Case - Rosewill Dual Fans
Power Supply - OCZ ZT 550W
Optical Drive - Samsung 24x SATA DVD RW

Since I've never built before, I have no idea whether or not this
list is good or not. I'm like Jesse in Breaking Bad making meth. I
can follow instructions, but I don't know much chemistry.

How does this list sound? Thanks.

Here is a list you can compare with yours.

Motherboard (New z97 allows for upgradability) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157507
CPU (The "K" in 4670K Means it overclocks) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116899
SSD (Will make your computer seem a lot faster with load times) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147247
HDD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236339
Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314
PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151095
Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147107
Same Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150686
Total: $954

Also if this is your first build, you would need to consider what you will use for the operating system. That could add another $100 depending.

Some people keep their old cases, reuse their old optical drives or hard drives to save money. Really depends on your budget.

I'm not saying my list is the "Best" parts, but the differences I've noted, would be some things to consider.

In this price range, I would go

M5A97 Rev 2.0
FX 6300
2x8GB 1600Mhz
WD Blue 1TB
Corsair CX 500 PSU
R9 280X
Corsair 200R
