Hi,

I've been on the team for a while now, but the transition to college upset my involvement quite a bit. Now that it's November, having another heater around sounds like a good idea, so I loaded up my F@H client again.

Overnight (consistently), my computer will soft crash. This doesn't seem to be a problem during the day because I return to my dorm within 6 hours and don't give it the 8 or so it takes to crash... I really don't know.

Symptoms:
After > ~6 hours, the computer will crash. Everything looks FINE, the power LED is on, the screens are in standby, my gaming keyboard is still lit up... But nothing I do will bring the screens back, they stay in standby... I've had to use the power button and hard reset every time this has happened.
The screens "turn off" after ten minutes (set from Win 7 power settings), so it's not just that they're turning off that triggers the problem.
This does not happen at all without the F@H client. My computer will happily run for weeks on end otherwise.

My computer:
AMD 8150 - 4.2Ghz
ATI Radeon HD 5500
AMD Radeon HD 6900
Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

I can't seem to find the log file after the computer has crashed... I don't know where it's stored on the hard drive.

I honestly don't know. Getting the drivers for both of those cards was a huge pain... Is there some way for me to check?
 
Yes, go to

Download the appropriate drvrs and reinstall. Doesn't matter what brand of card.

I've heard groanings on the forums of problems with current and beta AMD drvrs when it comes to folding. But go ahead and reinstall the 12.8 drvrs from the AMD website and maybe one of the AMD 6000 series team members can take it from there.

BTW, I'm folding along just fine using the 12.8 drvrs from the above link on my older HD 5870 presently so I know they work fine on that generation of cards.
 
Okay, I went ahead and downloaded the 12.10 Win7 x64 driver from the website. Says that it's for the 7000, 6000, and 5000 series.

Might have better luck with the 12.8. Unless there is some benefit to your games listed in the release notes of 12.10 then I would stick with 12.8. Otherwise, sounds like some other issues are at work. Might have to purge the old drivers completely and reinstall as the catalyst drivers don't do a thorough job of removing all traces of the former drivers.
 
Woah, I can't get 12.8 to uninstall... Windows 7 gives an error from the Uninstall section of the Control Panel, and when I try using the AMD Catalyst it crashes...

Should I open another thread to ask how to completely purge 12.8?

What should I be looking for as far as a culprit for the F@H crashing?

You may benefit from opening a new thread since this problem seems to be driver related. I avoid using driver removal utilities unless I have no choice and only then after a thorough backup of my important data. I used to use driversweeper when I ran into problems rolling back drivers. Seems to have gone the way of the Dodo bird. Some guys are using Atiman's utility. I never have. Maybe one of the other team members can walk you through the details.

Well, I screwed up my ATI drivers trying to uninstall/reinstall...
I made a new thread pleading for help here.
I'll try F@H again tonight, now that the ATI Catalyst is gone, and see what happens.

Okay,

After quite a few hours of generic stressful troublshooting, I have 12.8 back!
I'm going to load up F@H and see if it's still alive by tomorrow morning... In four hours... x.x

BigBubbaX, i hope it works with what you did, but it may be a bad overclock of the CPU.
I had somewhat similar problem on my Linux cpu-only folder: It also froze sometimes after a few hours of folding, but when i moved the mouse - i did get the screen image, but the comp was frozen - it didnt react to anything so i had to hard reset.
That was fixed by increasing the voltage on the cpu (i7 2600k @ 4.5ghz @ noctua nh-d14), but maybe you have some different issue.
 
Given that it isn't the graphics card/drivers, having the crash be related to overclocking definitely makes sense. If my computer crashes again, I'll unset the clock back to stock and see if that fixes it :D

Last night my computer didn't crash, but it didn't really have enough time to, and it also only produced half of its normal ppd.

It looks like after that driver mess up, I've crippled my computer's graphics abilities...

You may want to try deleting your gpu slots and creating new ones. I don't recall exactly if I had to do that or not. I know I have done it recently. Also, use gpu-z or msi afterburner to log gpu activity.
 
Update: F@H crashed while I was in class today... So it's very likely a bad overclock... So it's time for me to run stock until I'm capable of manually OCing.

I'll give the delete/recreate route a shot in a few minutes here.

Edit:
I deleted both gpus from the Configure -> Slots pane. Then I added two new gpus with default settings.
Both still fail without successfully starting or receiving any load.

Another Edit:
I gave up and used System Restore as a last ditch.. Oddly enough, it seems to have worked, which has not been my experience in the past. Anyway, I'm back on 12.8, and I'm going to try running F@H over Thanksgiving break with the AMD processor on stock settings.
