Let's hope it's the latter, for all our sakes.

About the XBox360's supposedly amazing hardware, I seem to remember the original XBox had pretty high expectations, but it ended up just being a GeForce 2 or something? And a 700MHz CPU? Whatever it actually was it was less than what we expected based on pre-launch hype. I think there will still be a significant gap between high end computer hardware and consoles for some time to come.

I never intended to play games on my computer....it just worked out that way. If it wasn't for the games there would not be much reason for upgrading, which most of us seem to enjoy almost as much as the games themselves.
