GTX 970 VS MSI R9 290X? Which is quicker and which to buy?

290 non x is probably the best bang for the buck card on the market. The 970 is superior in every way and costs 50% more. It's certainly no where near 50% faster.

The 290 sells for 220 all the time, and on occasion has seen south of 200 with mail in rebates.
 
I prefer EVGA myself, but they'll all perform about the same.

Look at the FTW+ or another factory OC card.
 
Read some reviews and choose one you like they're all basically the same aside from maybe handful that are geared towards extreme overclocking. I also agree with Atmin, I do like Evga cards and have had good luck with their support if any problem arises.
 
Here's an EVGA GTX970 comparison at newegg. You pay more for the factory overclock, but the power circuits and cooling might be slightly better.
