A bootable flashdrive can only be made under Windows XP 32 bit or Windows vista!
Tools needed:
USB Prep 8
PeToUSB
bootsect.exe
1.0 - Prep work

1)Extract all the programs and move PeToUSB.exe to USB prep's folder.

2)Open usb_prep8.cmd, you should see this window: CLICK

3)press a random key and continue. You should see PeToUSB on your screen after this step.
1.1 - the real deal

1)Click the "Start" button on PeToUSB without changing any settings.

2)Once the format is complete don't close the PeToUSB window. Minimize it, but DON'T close it.

3)Open cmd (Start>run>cmd) and navigate to the place where you saved the bootsect(use the command "cd" to navigate).

4)Now type "bootsect.exe /nt52 F:" NOTE: F is my flash drive's letter. Change "F:" to whatever yours is. If all went well you should see "Bootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes."

5)Now you can close this command prompt (don't close the usbprep8 one by mistake) and the petousb window.

6)A new cmd window should pop up (reference picture: CLICK)
1.2 - lots of waiting

1)Now you need to enter the correct information for numbers 1-3.
*Press 1 and then enter. A folder browse window will open for you to browse to the location of you XP setup files (e.g your DVD-ROM drive with Windows XP CD in or a virtual drive with a Win XP ISO mounted)
*Press 2 and enter a letter not currently assigned to a drive on your PC
*Press 3 and enter the drive letter of your USB stick
*Press 4 to start the process.

2)The script will ask you if you want to format drive T:. This is just a temporary drive the program creates to cache the windows installation files. Press Y then enter.

3)Once the drive is done with the formatting press enter to continue and you'll see Windows XP files being copied to the temp drive. Once that's done a pop-up will appear asking you if you want to copy the files to the flash drive, click yes and wait.

4) Once the script has completed copying files a window will pop up asking if you would like to USB drive to be preferred boot drive U: select yes if you're installing this on a netbook or something and no if you're making this for a PC that will run both SATA & PATA drives. tl;dr - PC- no, netbook - yes.

Everything is pretty much done now, here's a final tip that will ensure everything goes perfect with your installation:
Don't remove the flash drive from your PC/laptop/netbook/tablet/palmtop until the 1st time you've booted in the OS itself (e.g when you see your desktop & all).
To start the non-GUI part of the installation (blue 8 bit screen copying files n whatnot) boot up from the flash drive and select TXT mode.
Once you've completed that part and your PC wants to restart do that and boot up again from the flash drive, but this time select the other option (GUI setup + 1st start of windows).
That's pretty much it.
All credits go to the sources of this information.
P.S My English sucks so you probably won't understand 1/2 of the tutorial so yeah, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for posting.

Up to now, I've used this for Windows XP: http://wintoflash.com/download/en/

SELECT: 1st, text mode setup and you're done!

If the program is blocked from accessing the internet - it will still work.

32-Bit WinXP works perfectly but for 64-Bit WinXP:

When creating Windows XP 64-Bit installation, the following error may be displayed when installing Windows XP 64-Bit:
".SIF file used by setup is corrupted or missing:
Value 0 on the line in section [SourceDisksFiles] with key "SSA.EXE"

To prevent this error from showing up, before creating a Windows XP 64-Bit USB drive:

WinToFlash > Process Steps TAB > UNCHECK: Add additions files for installation process (SSA)

Of course for Windows 7 things are easier:
For Windows 7, connect your USB Flash drive then type this in Windows 7/Vista DOS [Windows XP DOS cannot be used for this]:

• diskpart
• list disk
• select disk #
[of USB Flash drive]
• clean
• create partition primary
• select partition 1
• active
• format fs=NTFS quick
• assign
• exit

Now copy all contents of Windows 7 ISO to the USB Flash drive, then reboot and hold F8 or F12 to get a boot selection menu from which you can choose to boot from the newly created USB Flash Drive.

Optionally, delete autorun.inf (because autorun.inf files are now routinely intercepted by antivirus software.)

Easier alternative for Windows 7 - link

Excellent link, I did not know MS had that. Does it work for WIn8?

Should work just fine, yeah.
If you already have Win 7 and you wanna upgrade to Win 8 you don't really need a flash drive or a CD, just mount the Windows 8 iso with DT or VCD and install, tested and working by me.
