Looking for some thoughts on a high end gaming notebook. Looking for gtx 1080 sli, 32-64gb ram, 17.3-18.4 screen, 4k if possible, dual ssd in raid, and the fastest cpu I can get. Curious if anyone has some thoughts. Thank you!
I was thinking this same thing as well, in a custom build those components would fill a rather large tower case in most instances and generally liquid cooling would be taken into high consideration. I mean (2) GTX 1080's are gonna generate some serious heat, think about the best operating AIB cards and the kind of cooling the manufactures uses to cool them and still temps of 60 C can be seen under load with good air flow. Those specs are just unrealistic for a laptop in my opinion.
You can check out https://www.xoticpc.com/, on many of their offerings they have some aftermarket cooling options in the way of better TIM, copper shims, etc. to improve cooling *slightly*. Sager is supposedly pretty good, I've had some luck with MSI. Had an Asus ROG laptop back in the first gen i7 days that developed an issue where it'd spit loud static from the speakers, even with headphones plugged in. RMA'd it 2-3 times and they never repaired it, so I swore them off.
Is this going to be a strict desktop replacement for, say, LANs? If so you're almost going to be just as well off with a cube/microtower mATX build. Dual 1080s, 17"+ screen? That's already 10+ pounds to carry around, and you're probably looking at sub 2 hour battery life, even at idle.
Edit - just thought, you obviously want the highest of the high end. Is there a purchasing deadline? I'd almost recommend waiting until 20xx laptops become more common if you can. Better performance if you go that way, or at the very least drop the price of 1080 based laptops.
My co-worker and I have been looking at gaming laptops recently, and we happened across this beast. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA57X7BJ3264 - Just shy of $6K and it's only got a 1080 screen... Because that makes total sense with SLI 1080s.
I've read that many of the "thinner" i7-8850H laptops have thermal throttling issues, even in 1060/1070 configs.
