I Can't Find a Good Optical Character Recognition Program

My friends is writing his thesis but all of the books he needs to study from are scanned, not in text form. It would seriously help him if he had the "Ctrl F" capability. All of the free OCR programs I have found either have a page limit or are terrible. Know of any good ones? He is probably willing to spend some money on it.

I looked and tried many. The only one I havent been able to play with is adobe's

to much $$$ for me to even think about it
