Price/performance wise you're ****ing batty to buy either of the cards. If you want a toy, the gtx is a nice option, but the 512 will be even nicer.
I think people are low-balling the price as a kind of 'wish.' In all likelihood the video card will retail for $700.00 - $750.00 dollars. The memory in the current GTX probably costs half as much for the same quantity, and there is twice as much in the new one. The GTX will probably drop a good $60-70.00 bucks in price, although I don't think the manufaturers will want to slit their margin's throats, considerings ati's best offering will only be marginally better as far as most measures can tell (at this point) and sport a good $100.00 up on the current incarnations.
I don't think the GT's price point will move much though as it is already a screaming deal for somebody who wants something that bats near the same point average as the 'big boys'. I'm interested in what ATI will be offering in that range as well as it may be a very good performer and somewhat cheap compared to the flagships.
In the interest of full disclosure, I just bought a BFG GTX off ebay 2 weeks ago for 465.00 shipped. It's given me a pretty nice OC on the memory and a marginal one on the clocks so I can't say I'm unhappy with the purchase. Especially considering I was able to schlep my old card for 60.00 bucks less than I paid for it after having it for 6 months.
I am slightly disappointed that it is soon to be trumped in the grand video card ****ing contest, but that is to be expected.
7800gtx in sli will likely barely edge out this new card, and you'll probably need a new PSU to use it. That's at least 900.00 after it's all said and done, definitely not worth it, just get one of the new ones, which will easily boast a 20-40% speed bonus over the gtx. and at most cost 750.00
