Is there a speed vs. temp rule of thumb?

One big advantage to overclocking and High Performance modding:

LEARNING.

You WILL learn a lot just through the attempt if it is well thought out and decently executed, period.
That knowledge can be used for future computers you build/mod and may actually be useful in other areas of life, believe it or not!

The truth of the matter is that performance overclocking mods like water chillers and near/sub zero chillers can help most chips to some degree but are rarely worth the cost on a pure cost/mhz basis.
But that is NOT what this is about, thankfully- it is also a hobby where money is often spent that does NOT give a reasonable return in performance but DOES give a fantastic return in joy, fun and knowledge.
And the above are priceless.

The big trick with a cpu's max attainable overclock is the law of diminishing returns, as stated by someone else: the closer you are to a specific chips' limit, the more it will cost in money, time and effort to get a stable performance increase. Finding exactly where that point is can be a lot of fun for those of us who enjoy that kind of thing.

One important note for your project: don't neglect other cooling areas!
Getting the cpu temp down to 20c will NOT make any difference at all if other components are at their heat limit- make sure the mosfets, ram and NB/SB have good cooling as well.

Post results. :)
