The PII/PIII design was actually the P6.
Intel has two design teams, one in the US and one in Israel. At the end of the P6 era the US team developed the Netburst architecture to replace the desktop chips, and the Israeli team developed a new mobile architecture (Core) that was more similar to the P6 then Netburst.
