Is it normal for a laptop HDD to get as hot a 50*C. It stays around this temp whether its loaded or not. I belive its a 7200RPM sata, but it may be 5200RPM.
Its a fujitsu (I think).

My CPU runs cool, about 38* per core loaded and idles around ambiant.

Well, I doubt many (if any) laptops have any sort of cooling besides transmitting heat to the surrounding components. With that said, I would rate that as normal, I can check mine whenever I use it next to verify.
