I was holding out for the Sapphire Nitro 7900xt to be closer to MSRP (Newegg has it for $1050, but it isn’t in stock…they have one in stock from a third party seller at $1450, which is overpriced), and since I can’t find it at MSRP, I’m looking at the 4080. I realize 4080 is overkill for 1080p, but it will last me a few years and will be good if/when I decide to upgrade to 1440p.

I was looking at the ASUS ROG STRIX model, but it is priced close to the founders 4090 ($1550 for the OC model priced from ASUS) and I’m not going to spend that much for a 4080. I looked at reviews of the MSI SUPRIM 4080, and it looks like a well made card at a (semi reasonable) price in the current market ($1390 from Newegg, cheaper than the Sapphire third party card).

My question is about the power requirement. MSI says 750w minimum, with 850 recommended. Would my 850w PSU work? Does anyone else have an MSI SUPRIM 4080 with an 850w PSU? Does the 750 minimum mean I can overclock?

...yep! IIRC the 4080 needs 3x pcie power leads... and you're set.

I run a 4090 and 12900k with 850w psu. I previously ran it on a 750w unit. You'll be fine.

prolly not a helpful answer but have you looked at a 4070? The gigabyte eagle ti is generally cheaper than other 4070's. Its fine for a 750 PSU, runs games like stink at 2k and honestly, I play a lot of games in 4k w/ no issue even though they say its a mainly a 2k card. Long term, you may want the extra memory of a 4800 as 12 gigs may not cut it. Just spit ballin' an idea for ya.

I looked at the 4070TI, but I didn’t like the ray tracing performance and the 12GB of VRAM put me off as well. It was between the 4080 and the 7900 XT, and I went with AMD. I bought the Sapphire 7900 XT NITRO. I found it on Amazon for not too much over what Sapphire was charging for the card. Thanks guys.

Well, can't say much about the RT performance (except that it's likely still as performant if not more than the AMD card), but you don't need to worry about 12GB of vRAM... especially at 1080p... and even at 1440p.

Anyhoo, The Nitro is a solid card... enjoy!!!! :)
