I am in the process of building my 1st system. So far I have the following selected, the CPU, MOBO, Case, Misc..

Intel Pentium® D Processor 840 3.2 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, Socket 775
Asus P5WD2 Premium 955X P4/Celeron 1066FSB LGA775 DDR2 ATX
Antec PlusView 1000 AMG Case, Used, w/5 80mm fans,, eBay,, done deal
CD/RW, DVD, Diskette, Film Reader, Speakers, & display, from old system.

Still working on the rest...

Corsair TWIN2X1024A-6400 1GB Kit DDR2-800 XMS2-6400
ASUS Extreme N6600 Silencer GeForce 6600 PCI Express 256MB DDR Video
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB Serial ATA II w/16MB Buffer
Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
PSU,, either a FSP BlueStorm AX500-A, 460W or OCZ PowerStream 520W

If I continue to find bargains,, this packaged will come in under 1500$US. You guy already saved me 600$us,, I was going to get a EE, but now find I can OC and save some $$$

I will OC the 840,, and probably the DDR2,, I don't plan to OC the vid card. I plan to stay stock on cooling until it presents a problem. If I can get the 840 to something in the 3.8GHz area,, rock stable 24/7, 365.25 @ yr, I'll stop.

Today's question(s)..

1)anyone familiar with the Silencer vid cards from ASUS?
2)on a mild OC job, will I still need + size heat sink and fan on the vid card?
3)Is the ASUS G6600 128mb or 256mb a fair deal at around 125$US??
4)any there better picks in this price range

Again, I don't game, create movies or videos, no CAD.. My cruncher is SETI, 24/7. The rest is online,, forums,, email,, a little photo editing.. I have a router w/wifi, and backup my data, papers, fia, & photography to my laptop.. My current Dell 2.4 P4 8250 is ipl'ed maybe twice a month, we lose power in the Conch Republic,, to dam many drunk touristas & hurricanes... I do have a UPS 650 and have only lost one 40GB hardfile in the last 5 years. I really think running a machine 24/7 helps keep it in shape..

Thanks
Jim

IT's an ok price for that card, you can get it from other brands for less but not by much. There isn't anything that I know that is better at that price range, but since you don't game you could save some money and getting a 6200 instead, and try to unlock it's pipes to make is like a 6600, overclocking will depend on each card, but you probably won't get to far without a fan.
