Msi Z77 Mpower power question

so im not really sure but do i need to connect ATX 6-pin to board for a single 680 sc GPU? im using 24 pin + 8 pin i checked the manual and it says to use it but why does it need all this extra power?

The the board you mean? Nope, only for SLI/CFx.
