I just built a HTPC and use it for mainly watching movies and surf the internet. I have WIN 8.1 Pro on it now.

My CPU is a Intel E5200 Dual Core, 2.5GHz 800MHz,2MB, LGA775, SLAY7. That is in a ASUS P5QL PRO Mobo.

I have an extra Intel Q6600 Quad Core, 2.4GHz, 8M, 1066, 05A, SLACR. It will be going into the same Mobo.

Would it be worth my while to change out the CPU's and do a reinstall of windows for this CPU? What would I gain by doing so?

Thanks

If you use the HTPC to rip your movies like wingman said, it will make the process around twice as fast. Otherwise for such light usage it won't have much of a benefit, and will likely just result in higher power consumption (didn't stop me from dropping in my i7 965 in my HTPC from an i3 530, however!)

You will not need to reinstall Win8.1 when replacing a CPU.
